5th of November- Guy Fawkes night

“Remember, remember the 5th of November; Gunpowder Treason and Plot.”

Guy Fawkes Day or Bonfire Night, Great Britain celebrates the 5th of November with a dazzling display of fireworks and a bonfire. Now I love a good fire works display, (and London does not disappoint!) but I have to admit I was completely ignorant of this holiday until I came here. I had to watch V for Vendetta to catch up…

But now I have learned that this is a holiday celebrating the foiling of Guy Fawkes‘ plan in 1605 to blow up the House of Lords (aka Parliament). So the Brits light off fireworks to celebrate the thanksgiving of Parliament still standing, and throw straw figures of Guy Fawkes onto bonfires. Not going to lie the last part creeps me out a bit. But I do love the fireworks.

I guess this holiday mixes the US Independence Day with our Thanksgiving. They are thankful for being free from this Gunpowder Plot. In fact earlier on the 5th of November was called Thanksgiving. If only we could mix the two! Fireworks on the US Thanksgiving, and turkey and stuffing on Bonfire Night! Well a girl can wish can’t she…

Had a stunning view of the fireworks off Victoria Embankment… wish my camera was a good!

Till next time…

Introductions

Moving across the pond to study abroad is never an easy decision. But it is not one I will ever regret. Leaving home, family, and friends for a new, exciting, but scary world was nerve-racking. But then stepping off the plane-London welcomed me!

Since then it has been a pleasure getting to know London town. This blog will document my journey past and present in discovering London as a tourist and now an international student.

About me:

Originally from California, but grew up in Maryland, I am no stranger to travel and change. In fact it was a dream come true to move to London and live abroad as a student. I am in my third year at the Royal Veterinary College- England’s first veterinary college. My first degree was in marine biology from UCSC, and from there my work with marine life inspired me to be a vet. I know, I am following every little girl’s cliche dreams: play with whales and be a vet. But what can I say! I love animals!
